Old mulch has a way of making an otherwise decent yard look tired and forgotten. It fades, it gets matted down, debris collects on top of it, and after a season or two it just looks rough. That's exactly what we were working with here - faded red mulch throughout the beds, leaf debris piled up in the rock borders and under the deck, and beds that had lost any real definition.

We cleared it all out first. That means debris removal, cleaning up the rock edging along the side of the house, and getting the beds prepped before a single scoop of new mulch went down. You can't just layer fresh mulch on top of a mess and expect it to look good. The cleanup work is what makes the difference.

Once the beds were prepped, we laid fresh dark brown mulch throughout - around the foundation, under the deck, along the driveway-side borders, and around the natural boulder feature near the road. Dark mulch does something that lighter or faded mulch just can't. It makes the green lawn pop, it sharpens the edges of every bed, and it gives the whole property a pulled-together look that's hard to get any other way.

This is one of those landscaping jobs that looks simple but covers a lot of ground. Multiple bed areas, varied terrain, rock edging to work around, and beds that run alongside the structure of the house and under an elevated deck. Getting clean, even coverage in all those spots takes attention and the right process. We're proud of how this one came out.

A fresh layer of mulch is one of the highest-value improvements you can make to a yard without touching the lawn itself. It suppresses weeds, holds moisture in the soil, and makes the whole property look maintained and intentional. Whether it's one small bed or a full property like this one, the impact is hard to argue with.
